As the decorations go up and space hits a premium in homes across the country, residents of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham are being urged to free up space by taking good quality items such as un-needed Christmas trees and last season’s decorations, as well as old books and toys or even furniture and sports equipment with them when they visit their local Recycling Centre for onward donation to the re-use shop at Reuse BDR, Sheffield Road, Conisbrough, DN12 2BZ in Doncaster where pre-loved items are being re-sold to benefit those in need.
Cassie Webster, General Manager of Materials Trading at FCC Environment speaks on behalf of the partnership between Barnsley Council, Doncaster Council, Rotherham Council, FCC Environment and Doncaster Refurnish:
“We were delighted to be able to re-open our re-use shop to the public on 2 December in time for Christmas and residents are indeed coming back in to the shop to ‘bag a bargain’ but we have seen a real drop in the volume of good quality items which we can make available in the shop.
“How residents donate has changed due to Covid of course, for example we can’t aid with unloading of cars for the safety of the public and of our staff at present. In addition, donations can’t be made directly to the shop but there is a clearly marked re-use area at all of our 14 recycling centers across Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham where pre-loved items can be left and we promise they will be given a good new home, and will contribute towards providing vitals services within the area.
“With Christmas approaching, it’s a really good time to have a clear out, of old decorations and unwanted items to free up some space and help a good cause at the same time.”

Councillor Lamb, who is the Chair of the Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham Joint Waste Board, which oversees the operations of Household Waste Recycling Centre’s in the three areas said:
“We were delighted to re-open our re-use shop in time for Christmas as part of our drive to increase re-use and recycling in the area.
“By donating to and purchasing items from our re-use shop, you are not only extending the life and use of the items instead of throwing them away, you are supporting Doncaster Refurnish who undertake vital and critical work across Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham.”
The re-use shop in Conisbrough is part of a partnership between Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham Councils, waste and recycling partner FCC Environment and charity partner Doncaster Refurnish. Established in January 2003, the charity aims to provide affordable furniture to local people providing bulky waste collection services and delivery of items for those in need.
