Wilder Humber marks UK’s largest intertidal oyster release

As a multi-agency project reintroduces 300,000 native oysters to the Humber estuary, volunteer citizen scientists play a vital part

The Humber Estuary has always been a place of movement and change, with tides shifting across vast mudflats, migratory birds feeding and resting, and communities living alongside one of the UK’s most distinctive coastal landscapes. What it hasn’t had for almost a century, however, is a thriving population of native oysters.

That is now beginning to change.

This December, Wilder Humber – a collaborative seascape restoration project led by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, with support from Ørsted, The Oyster Restoration Company, and the Marine Management Organisation’s Fisheries and Seafood Scheme – reached an inspiring milestone. We carried out the largest release of native oysters in the intertidal zone ever attempted in the UK. The intertidal zone is the region between the high and low tide marks, and is home to diverse marine life.

A long-awaited return

Native European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) once flourished here. Historical accounts describe more than 300 acres of reefs in the Humber, forming a vibrant ecosystem teeming with marine life. Overfishing, pollution and disease gradually erased these reefs during the 20th century and, by the 1940s, oysters had vanished from the estuary altogether.

In July 2025 we began to put that right, returning 28,000 oysters to the Humber for the first time in roughly 80 years. Now, following the deployment of a further 250,000 spat (juvenile oysters attached to scallop shells), we have introduced 300,000 oysters in total – a major step towards our five-year goal of restoring half a million native oysters.

Why oysters matter

Oysters are one of nature’s great ecosystem engineers. A single oyster can filter significant volumes of seawater each day, helping to strip out excess nutrients and improve clarity. Their reefs create nursery habitats for a whole host of marine species, from flounder and sea bass to shrimp, crabs and wading birds such as the curlew and oystercatcher. In fact, oyster reefs can support more than 460 associated species.

They also help stabilise sediments and reduce coastal erosion, acting as nature-based defences that become even more important as our climate and coastlines change.

Restoring oysters isn’t just about bringing back one species. It is about restoring the health and resilience of the entire estuary.

Testing new restoration methods

The majority of the 300,000 oysters now thriving in the Humber come from The Oyster Restoration Company’s hatchery in Scotland. Many were deployed as ‘Rapid Reefs’ – clusters of spat attached to shells and enclosed in biodegradable mesh bags, which form ready-made living reefs when placed on the seabed. The remainder are individual adult oysters. We are carrying out this large-scale experiment at Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Spurn Point Nature Reserve. Our findings will help determine whether innovative, cost-effective techniques like ‘Rapid Reefs’ can make oyster restoration more scalable and sustainable in the future, not just in the Humber but across the UK.

One of the most inspiring aspects of this project has been the commitment from local volunteers. Over the course of the deployment, 48 volunteers contributed more than 340 hours, moving equipment, positioning oyster bags across the mudflats and helping ensure every stage of the work was carried out with care.

Their effort reflects the same community-driven spirit that we see in citizen science groups across Yorkshire: people stepping up to monitor, protect and restore their local environments when statutory monitoring alone is not enough.

Looking ahead

The return of oysters to the Humber is only the beginning. Over the coming years, we will continue to monitor reef growth, survival and biodiversity across our sites. We’ll also be sharing our findings openly, so other communities, conservation groups and researchers can build on what we learn.
