Open letter to the government on human rights

Human rights are universal – a self-evident truth – they must never again be made into the preserve of a single group

Dear government,

I want to start by saying that I genuinely understand the complexity surrounding immigration, both here in our country and on a global scale. It’s not a matter we can simply turn our backs on though, especially considering the added layer of climate migration that will become more prevalent due to the impacts of climate change. This is a significant issue that should already be a focal point in the discussions of those in power worldwide, and it requires a united, global effort.

However, what deeply troubles me is the willingness within our current government to potentially weaken or discard our human rights framework as a response to these challenges. I’m reaching out to every decent person in our country, asking you to consider that the solutions to these intricate problems should not involve compromising the very human rights that define our shared values.

This is not just a plea to protect the rights of others; it’s a heartfelt reminder that these human rights act as a safety net for each of us. You never really know when you might find yourself in a situation where you need this protection, whether you’re here at home or abroad. As we navigate through these discussions, let’s keep in mind that the security provided by our human rights is a universal one that any one of us might lean on.

An autumn statement that would actually transform Britain

Human rights: truths held to be self-evident

The threads that bind us together as a world of humanity I suppose are fragile, yet they are undeniably powerful. At the core of this delicate weave lies a profound belief in the sanctity of human life — a belief that each person, regardless of their background, holds an intrinsic worth that deserves protection and respect.

In the heart of the United Kingdom, our commitment to human rights has been a guiding light over many years now. It’s a promise etched into the fabric of our society, a promise that we are committed to freedom, equality, and justice. As we stand on the precipice of change, I implore everyone not to let this promise fade.

Human rights are not just legal doctrines; they are the soul of our shared humanity. They remind us that every voice, every life, and every story matters. In the face of adversity, these rights provide the shield against discrimination, the sword against injustice, and the embrace that says, ‘You are valued’.

Our embrace of human rights is a plea to nurture a society where diversity is not just tolerated but celebrated. It’s a call to ensure that every person, regardless of their background, has an equal chance to spread their wings and soar. It’s a commitment to writing a narrative where the ink is justice, fairness, and compassion.

Honouring the sacrifice of those who came before

As we navigate the complexities of our world, let us not forget the hard-fought battles that have paved the way for the rights we hold dear today. Let us not lose sight of the fact that our strength lies in unity, in standing together against the currents that threaten to erode the foundations of our shared values.

In this plea, I ask you to hold on to our commitment to human rights as if it were a cherished heirloom, passed down from generation to generation. Let us not allow apathy or indifference to dull the lustre of these rights. Instead, let them shine brightly as a beacon, guiding us through the storms of uncertainty.

For in our shared humanity, each thread is irreplaceable. Each right is a promise worth keeping. So, I ask you, let us not lose our way. Let us protect, cherish, and uphold human rights, not just for ourselves but for the generations yet to come.

Yours,

John Heywood
