A scrappy game for Leeds United and Luton Town at Kenilworth Road saw Welsh internationals come to the fore. Daniel James’s superb strike and smart playmaking left the Luton defence struggling. Karl Darlow was in goal, filling in for Illan Meslier who’d recently been dropped by Daniel Farke. The game had some very high-quality moments though, and a few players showed Premier League quality.
Luton looked to continue a promising run that has given fans hope of avoiding back-to-back relegations. Isaiah Jones had spun round the back of the Leeds United defence, as the hosts celebrated an early lead. But James responded with a moment of real quality, cutting inside to rattle home the leveller.
Matt Bloomfield’s Luton side have now lost just once in six matches, though the sight of striker Elijah Adebayo limping off with an injury will be a concern for the home side. Despite having a poor goalscoring season, Adebayo reminded fans of his quality and importance for this Luton side, after scoring double figures in the Premier League last season.
Leeds held by Luton
Leeds had a huge chance to snatch all three points, as Manor Solomon spied his opportunity after another Dan James searching run and pass. There were changes in the Leeds lineup, with Farke opting to drop under-fire goalkeeper Meslier in favour of Darlow. The switch almost paid off early when Darlow’s quick throw released Solomon, whose cross found James; but his header was straight at Luton keeper Thomas Kaminski.
Leeds continued to push and nearly found the net when Solomon’s whipped free kick ricocheted off the unsuspecting Junior Firpo, forcing Kaminski into a smart save. The hosts shocked the former league leaders when Jordan Clark and Adebayo combined down the left. Adebayo muscled his way through midfield and released Clark, whose whipped cross found Jones unmarked at the far post for an easy volley against Darlow.
Luton fans goaded the travelling faithful, reminding them of their Wembley nightmares.
Daniel James responded in emphatic fashion, with a fantastic weak-foot curling effort leaving Kaminski no chance. James created and scored for Leeds, with other players spurning chances to win the game.
The second half began with a blow for Luton as Adebayo was forced off, being replaced by ex-Manchester United winger Tahith Chong. Thelo Aasgaard, newly signed from Wigan – nearly restored the hosts’ lead, cutting inside and curling a shot toward the far post – only to be denied by a fine save from Darlow.
Leeds turned up the pressure in the final minutes, with James swinging in a dangerous cross that seemed destined for Solomon to smash and grab on the road. The Israeli winger was unable to make proper contact, with his effort going well over.
In stoppage time, the Luton defenders made vital final tackles to prevent Isaac Schmidt from snatching a dramatic winner for the visitors.
Tight at the top of the Championship
Leeds fans will be worried that they are ‘falling apart again’, after this run of form has seen them drop out of the automatic playoff spots. By contrast, Luton fans will feel happy with a point, but may now be wondering where these levels of performance have been all season with the teams around them picking up points.
Farke’s team have now drawn three consecutive league games and managed just one victory in their past six, allowing the chasing pack to close in. With Burnley winning at Coventry, Leeds’ hopes of automatic promotion are now out of their hands, relying on slip-ups from either Sheffield United or Burnley – a situation Leeds fans are all too familiar with.
Sheffield United will be delighted with this result though (despite losing to Oxford away from Bramall Lane), as will new Championship leaders Burnley, with Sunderland still believing they’ve an outside chance.
