God rest

A carol, on the occasion of the usual charlatans’ attempt to bolster their flagging fortunes by enlisting God to the cause of division

To the tune of ‘God rest, ye merry gentlemen’

God’s sake! These endless grifters, men
who peddle hate and fear,
whose anger is performative
their self-interest clear,
whose target is the gullible
year on year on year:
O far-right wing of conmen, sad boys
conmen, sad boys.
O far-right wing of conmen and sad boys.

They’re now putting Christ in Christmas
or so they like to claim.
They care nothing for his teachings,
barely know his name,
Our Saviour’s just an income stream
‘cause these grifters have no shame:
O far-right wing of conmen, sad boys
conmen, sad boys.
O far-right wing of conmen and sad boys.

A homeless Palestinian,
a family of Jews
these grifters would have crucified
– still would, if asked to choose –
their new-found faith another con,
a cold, cynical ruse:
O far-right wing of conmen, sad boys
conmen, sad boys.
O far-right wing of conmen and sad boys.

Mansion upkeep is expensive,
designer clothes aren’t cheap.
A holiday in Panama?
The cost would make you weep.
To maintain a grifter’s lifestyle,
what others sow you needs must reap:
O far-right wing of conmen, sad boys
conmen, sad boys.
O far-right wing of conmen and sad boys.

They’ve no sense of community,
are always on the take.
Emotionally crippled men
whose every word is fake,
their one love is their bank account
and whatever cash they make:
O far-right wing of conmen, sad boys
conmen, sad boys.
O far-right wing of conmen and sad boys.

We’re all here for so short a time
so few years in this place,
to make the world less ugly is
a cause we should embrace;
make Christmas Day like all the days,
one grifters can’t deface:
O far-right wing of conmen, sad boys
conmen, sad boys.
O far-right wing of conmen and sad boys.
