With the mainstream media attention diverted from Afghanistan, this week the Bylines Network podcast looks at the situation on the ground, and what has changed since the Taliban took over the country in August.
Changes on the ground
After a new, all-male, administration of the Taliban ‘Old Guard’ was announced, clampdowns began on women’s rights, and the right protest. After initial attempts to appear reformed, the Taliban have shown little restraint in the past couple of weeks, particularly as they crushed the last elements of resistance in the Panjshir Valley.
The team also speak about an Afghan interpreter Kerry had been interviewing for Yorkshire Bylines. Having lost friends and family to the Taliban, the interpreter, kept anonymous for his safety, has since fled the country, and is attempting to reach the UK to seek asylum. After assistance was promised to so many interpreters who helped protect British soldiers, it is crucial for the government to now fulfil their end of the bargain, and ensure that they have a safe haven in the UK.
